What are bass traps?

Bass traps are acoustic energy absorbers.

They dampen low-frequency sound energy by using friction and to turn sound energy into heat.

The main purpose of bass traps is to reduce low-frequency resonances in critical listening and recording environments. 

They can be divided into two types, namely resonant and porous bass traps.

Resonant bass traps consist of two subcategories which are panel absorbers and Helmholtz resonators.

Porous bass traps, on the other hand, are made from different materials such as mineral wool, fiberglass, or open-cell foam.

However, they are both effective and the difference lies in the way they work.

One of the main differences is the absorption spectrum.

Resonant bass traps are narrower for resonating while porous are broader.

Since porous are smaller in size and are less trouble to build, they don’t need to be tuned as they do not resonate.

Resonant bass traps need to be tuned mechanically since they resonate with the frequencies they absorb.

Things you need to build DIY bass traps

Here is a list of tools and materials that you’ll need before you start building your DIY bass traps.

How to make bass traps

The basic steps to building homemade bass traps are: 

  • Cutting the plywood 
  • Assemble the pieces into a frame/s and attach the pieces with glue or staples.
  • Fill the frame with the insulation material
  • Wrap the frame with fabric and secure it with glue or staples

You can either build triangular bass traps or panel bass traps.

Although they both essentially do the same thing, one over the other works best in certain situations.

Let us take a look at how to build triangle bass traps and panel shaped bass traps.

Building triangular bass traps

1. Sketch your design

You don’t have to be a skilled illustrator to sketch your design.

A basic sketch with instructions will give you an idea of the shape and dimensions of the wood.

2. Cut the wood 

This is the hardest part of the process because any mistake here will reduce the effectiveness of your bass trap.

Take your time and ensure you have the correct dimensions before you start to cut. 

Triangular bass traps need two “walls” and two smaller triangles for the top and bottom.

So you’ll need four pieces in total.

3. Assembling the frame

It is time now to assemble the frame.

To hold the pieces together you can either use glue, staples, or screws.

Choose the tool to secure the frame based on the thickness of the wood.

4. Stuff the frame

The next step involves stuffing the frame with your insulation material.

Take your pick from fiberglass insulation, mineral wool, or cellulose.

Remember you will need a piece of plastic mesh to tame the cellulose if you go with that option.

5. Cover it up

The final step is to wrap the trap in a breathable fabric that is sound transparent.

Cut the fabric to match the dimensions of your bass traps and remember to cut two small triangular pieces for the top and bottom.

You can use some spray adhesive to glue down the end of the fabric so that they don’t get loose.

Building panel shaped bass traps

Panel bass traps are a little easier to construct than their triangular counterparts since they’re just panels attached to one another.

1. Sketch

Step one is the same as the triangular bass trap which is making a sketch.

2. Cut the wood

In this instance, the dimension will have to be that of the fiberglass panel so it makes it easier to cut correctly.

3. Putting the frame together

Attach the different pieces of wood to make the frame using screws to ensure a tight hold. 

Drill holes into the frame before screwing the fiberglass panels into place to avoid damage.

4. Wrap it up

Follow the same steps as the triangular bass traps and wrap the entire thing in some breathable fabric.

Bass traps: DIY ideas

Pre-made bass traps are available but they may not be that affordable especially if it is a large room and you need a few pieces. 

Luckily, there are several ways to build bass traps which can be done right at home if you’re feeling up to it.

2. Super chunk corner bass traps for studio 

This type of bass trap uses 2” thick 48″x24″ mineral wool panels.  

Cut the panels into 2-foot squares and cut the corners diagonally to get 4 triangles per panel.

Ensure to cut enough panels for each corner of the room from the floor to the ceiling.

3. Mounted corner bass traps

For a mounted corner, bass trap it’s best to combine a bass trap and a sound absorber so you don’t end up with a completely dead room.

While the frame is made from plywood the front of this bass trap requires you to use a pegboard.

First, make your frame, then cut your mineral wool insulation into triangles and place it into the frame. 

Secure the pegboard front with glue or another alternative to screws since pegboard isn’t the sturdiest material out there and can damage easily.

Mountable DIY corner bass traps should be placed at least 3 feet from the floor with the insulation going all the way up to the ceiling.

4. Standing prism tall corner bass traps

These standing bass traps for corners are shaped like triangular prisms.

Stack two on top of each other and make them big enough to cover from the ceiling to the floor in the corner.

Use ½ inch plywood triangles for the top and bottom.

These bass traps use loose cellulose instead of rigid insulation materials.

5. Home or recording studio bass traps

Make a frame using  1”x2” pine and using two layers of 2-inch thick fiberglass make 2’x4’ panels.

Wrap some fabric around the fiberglass panel and staple it to the pine frame.

Stack two of these traps in the corner to make a floor to ceiling trap to capture low range sounds.

Furthermore, place traps in the corners opposite the source of the sound to further control reverb in the room.
